How to check photo location data

A how-to for detecting GPS in the file you will share—separate from the conceptual geotag explainer.

Key takeaway

In short: Use Photo GPS Viewer on the final file. If GPS is missing, we say so. No pixel/IP guesses.

Vs the concept guide

Photo location data explained covers what geotags are. This page is the checklist for checking them. Tool: Photo GPS Viewer.

When to check

Marketplace listings, housing photos, live travel posts, and anonymous tips. iPhone exports: see iPhone photo location data.

Steps

  1. Use the final share file.
  2. Open GPS Viewer and drop the image.
  3. Read GPS detected vs not detected.
  4. If present, note lat/lon (and altitude/timestamp when available).

Processing is local; coordinates are not sent to analytics.

Optional map click

Maps do not auto-load. Only an explicit “view on map” click opens OpenStreetMap with coordinates in the URL.

Next actions

If GPS is present, follow remove location from photo and Remove Photo GPS. For broader EXIF, see how to check EXIF.
