Your images never leave your device. All conversions are processed locally in your browser.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Drop or select HEIC/HEIF photos exported from your iPhone.
  2. Review the queue and convert. The HEIC decoder loads only when needed.
  3. Download PNG files individually or as a ZIP, then open them in your editor.

For web delivery afterward, compress or convert to WEBP so pages stay light.

Why convert iPhone HEIC to PNG?

When an iPhone camera is set to High Efficiency, photos land as HEIC. That format is excellent for storage on the phone, but the moment you move into retouching, masking, background removal, or a Windows-heavy workflow, HEIC support becomes uneven. Some design apps open it only with plugins; others reject the extension outright. Converting to PNG gives you a widely understood raster file that most editors can open without drama.

JPG is fine for quick sharing, yet it cannot store transparency and it re-compresses every time you save. If you still need to composite logos, cut out products, or hand files to a print vendor that expects PNG, a PNG intermediate is usually the safer bridge. You can always export a lighter WEBP or JPG later for delivery.

How HEIC and PNG differ in practice

HEIC prioritizes efficient photographic storage. PNG prioritizes predictable pixels, broad tool support, and an optional alpha channel. Photographic HEIC files often grow when saved as PNG—that is expected, not a bug. Treat PNG as an editing master when compatibility matters more than bytes.

Good use cases

  • Photoshop, Affinity, Pixelmator, or Canva refuses HEIC
  • You plan background removal and want a PNG-ready pipeline
  • A school portal or print shop requires PNG uploads
  • Teammates on Windows cannot preview HEIC reliably
  • You want a batch of iPhone stills normalized before editing

If the only goal is messaging or a tight upload quota, JPG may still win. Decide the destination first, then pick the format.

What local browser conversion actually does

Files are not uploaded. Your browser decodes HEIC, paints pixels to a canvas, and encodes PNG for download. The original remains on disk. Because this is a re-encode—not a container copy—some HEIC-specific metadata may not travel into the PNG. Live Photo motion is not included; only the still frame is converted. Keep originals if GPS timestamps or archival metadata matter.

Quality, size, and a sane two-step workflow

PNG is not a “turn the quality dial and watch size collapse” format the way JPG is. Expect larger files when photographic HEIC becomes PNG. A practical pattern is: convert to PNG for edits, then resize/compress or switch to WEBP/JPG for publishing. Dropping a 12MP phone photo to roughly 1080–1600px wide is often enough for social posts and still keeps edges clean for on-screen use.

Compatibility checklist

  1. Use a current Chromium, Firefox, or Safari build that can decode HEIC (helper decoder may load on demand).
  2. Skip incomplete iCloud placeholders and damaged downloads.
  3. Test one PNG in the destination app before converting a whole album.
  4. Split huge batches if device memory is limited; about 50MB per file is a practical ceiling.

Troubleshooting

  • Conversion fails: Confirm the download finished and the extension is heic/heif.
  • Colors look different: Preview differences across apps and displays are common—verify in the final tool.
  • File too large: Finish edits, then compress, resize, or export WEBP/JPG.
  • No transparency: Camera HEIC stills usually have no alpha; cut out backgrounds separately.

Privacy

Processing stays in the browser. Nothing is sent to ImgToJPG servers for conversion, which is useful on shared networks and for personal photos you do not want mirrored remotely.

Editing desk checklist

Before converting a whole shoot, agree whether PNG is an intermediate or a final deliverable. Intermediates can be larger; finals for the web should usually move on to WEBP or JPG after retouching. Name folders so nobody mistakes a 25MB PNG edit master for something that should be attached to email. Local HEIC→PNG keeps unpublished product shots off random upload converters while you build that desk habit.

If multiple editors touch the same album, convert once to PNG, store that set in a shared edit bucket, and forbid silent recompression of the PNG until export day. Generational clutter is how skin texture dies before the campaign even launches.

FAQ

Does HEIC to PNG create transparency automatically?

No. Typical iPhone stills have no alpha channel. Remove the background in an editor if you need transparency.

When should I choose PNG over JPG?

Choose PNG for editing, compositing, or pipelines that reject HEIC. Choose JPG for casual sharing and smaller attachments.

Are Live Photos supported?

We convert the still frame. The paired video clip is not included.

Is my original HEIC deleted?

No. The original stays on your device; you download a new PNG.

Can I batch convert?

Yes. Add multiple HEIC files, convert, and download individually or as a ZIP.
